Progressives: Major Reformers And The Impact The Had on the reform
Progressive reformers were convinced that industrialization and urbanization was making society worst. They wanted to make it better by using logic, reasoning, and sometimes religion to make society work more efficiently. though they may have common believes, they had different priorities. some thought political reform was more important and women focused on getting the right to vote. Then other progressives wanted social welfare for children, as well as government regulations to aid the workers. Big businesses was also a concern for some reformers. then the religious reformers wanted to close the gap between the rich and the poor.

Jane Addams - Pioneer in the field of social work who funded the settlement house movement through the establishment of Hull House in Chicago, Illinois
Margaret Sanger - Educated urban poor about the benefits of family planning through birth control. She founded the organization that became Planned Parenthood. Upton Sinclair - Wrote The Jungle which Investigated dangerous working conditions and unsanitary procedures in the meat-packing industry. Then In 1906 the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act were passed. W.E.B. DuBois - Founder of the NAACP, and a Harvard-educated professor who focused on the need for a traditional liberal arts education for African-Americans who could then insist upon equal treatment and rights from white society. Ida B. Wells - She wrote A Red Record which Provided statistics on the lynching of African-Americans. Then NAACP joined the fight for Federal anti-lynching legislation. Ida Tarbell - "History of the Standard Oil Company" was articles in McClure's Magazine which Exposed the ruthless tactics of the Standard Oil Company. Then In 1911 in court case Standard Oil v. U.S. , the company was declared a monopoly and broken up. |
